Thirsty Thursday: What’s Your Verse?

Thirsty Thursday: What’s Your Verse?

About this time last year, a  dear friend of mine, Brooke McGlothlin shared on her social media how she chooses a verse to pray over her family each year. She even had a friend create the most beautiful work of art to display the verse in her home all throughout the year. Isn’t that a lovely idea?

I found it so lovely, I wanted to spread the word.

Last week, I challenged you to choose a word. I pray you were able to receive a word that suits you in this season.

Today, I want to go a tad deeper. Why don’t we branch off that word and find a verse to attach to it?

Don’t have a bible? This is still for you. Take the word you chose for this year and search Scripture associated with it on Google’s search engine. A plethora of verses will be offered to you as well as what translation they stem from.

Why choose a verse after already choosing a word? To put it simply, I know what it is to be stretched and if I have to guess, you do as well. Whether at work, home, as a mother or a wife, we all tend to be stretched to our max at times. There’s also a kind of stretch that refines your character and your heart in the meantime. So why not, during those stretching seasons of life, become more intentional about placing our hope in Jesus to carry us as well as redeem us?

Choosing a word is a fabulous place to start. However, when we attach a verse from God’s Word which is living and active, I feel it brings life to your word and will stretch you deeper spiritually.

If you are on the fence with your faith, I feel this is a great place to begin.

The verse I chose for myself as well as my family for 2017 is:

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends,
let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit,
perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
2 Corinthians 7:1

This is not only an anchor as we move forward into this new year as a hope for things to come. Your verse will also be a wonderful place of reflection if you intentionally pursue and allow yourself to be stretched by your word and anchor yourself within your verse as you look back nearing the end of 2017. I have no doubt you will see the power of His Word if you choose to stand firm upon those words through one year of all the ups and downs of life.

I’m so thankful I learned of my friend’s yearly tradition of this. Going a step further and having your verse tangibly placed in your home as she did to be constant reminder is a wonderful idea as well.

Just as I was about to publish this post, I was corresponding with Brooke and realized she posted her reflection of 2016 and how powerful and surreal this yearly choice is for her. I’d love for you to take a few more minutes and hop over to her blog via the link at the bottom of the post  and experience a taste of what inspired me so a year ago when she shared this very concept.

Brooke, the impact you have on my life from toddler to a mom of toddlers, from babysitter to writing mentor, I have no doubt our friendship was a divine appointment. Thank you for your obedience and laying the groundwork to display hope in my heart for the things which I hold dearest to my heart! To you and Jesus, I say Thank You!

Jesus, I pray this concept be the root of all resolutions for your precious daughter. I pray you send to her the very verse you would have her stand firm upon throughout this upcoming year that she may witness Your faithfulness through every high and every low. I so deeply yearn for each reader to know and experience Your faithfulness the way I have and I find no better way than to begin our new year with a personal and specific hope in You through your living Word that we may see what You can do through us. In Your name I ask these things. Amen.
